Concept Running Respirator
The project is part of a dissertation project at the Polytechnic University of Milan, developed in collaboration with NDF. The concept illustrates the development of the “DIVER Running Respirator,” an electro-ventilated respirator for urban runners designed to improve their running experience in polluted areas. Collaborating with Narvalo, the project aims to create a device that combines effective protection and comfort while running.
1. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT BRIEF
Based on the observation that urban air pollution poses a serious health risk to runners, the project aimed to develop a respirator that would effectively filter polluted air while providing freedom of movement and comfort during exercise.
2. DESIGN CHALLENGES
As already highlighted in the brief, the design challenges are located on various levels of the design.
Protection and comfort
Effectively balance the need for reliable protection from pollution with the need for user comfort and convenience.
Integrated technology
To develop a solution that integrated advanced filtration and ventilation technologies into a portable and lightweight device.
Adaptability
To create a device that could be easily adapted to different running conditions and types of users.
3. DESIGN PROCESS
Scan the project into its most relevant design phases.
Air pollution analysis
In-depth study of air pollution in urban areas and its effects on runners’ health. This phase provided the knowledge base to identify the main pollutants to be filtered and the specific needs of runners while running.
Filtration and ventilation technologies
Research on existing filtration (HEPA, activated carbon) and ventilation (electroventilated systems) technologies by selecting the most effective and practical technologies to ensure natural breathing and optimal protection from pollution.
User research
Survey through questionnaires and interviews with urban runners to understand their concerns, needs, and preferences. This step directed the product design toward solutions that would concretely respond to users’ requests, improving the acceptability and usability of the respirator.
Definition of the design brief
Synthesizing the input gathered in the research phase to define the specific objectives of the respirator design. By providing a clear direction for concept development, it was ensured that all subsequent choices were aligned with the set goals.
Concept generation
Brainstorming and creative sessions to explore several possible solutions, taking into account selected technologies and user needs. A variety of innovative ideas were generated, which were then evaluated and refined to arrive at the final respirator concept.
Selection of materials and components
Selection of materials for the vest and mask, and selection of components for the air purifier (filter, fan, battery), ensuring that the final product would be practical, durable, and comfortable for use while running, with particular attention to light weight and strength of materials.
Prototyping and testing
Fabrication of functional prototypes of the respirator to test design, fit, effectiveness of filtration and ventilation system.
This step offered essential feedback for design refinement and functionality optimization, ensuring that the final product met all user expectations.
4. PROJECT OUTPUTS
From the decomposition of the initial problems, a number of design solutions were proposed that were able to convert technical limitations into a structural renewal of the starting product
Advanced filtration
Use of HEPA filters for effective air cleaning from particulate matter and pollutants.
Assisted ventilation
An electro-ventilated ventilation system to facilitate breathing during intense physical exertion.
Ergonomic design
An adjustable vest and mask designed for a secure and comfortable fit during running.
