 1. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT BRIEF

Building on the success of the Urban Mask, we set ourselves ambitious new challenges in product development: to improve the use of the mask by integrating electronics and sensors.
The goal is to move from having a protective product to an informative one, bringing technology on board a mask.

2. DESIGN CHALLENGES

As already highlighted in the client’s brief, the product design challenges are located on various levels.

Differentiation

Adopting electronics and sensors, while calibrating the footprint in small spaces

Balance

Balance between performance and footprint, between ergonomics and aesthetics.

Certification

Ensure IP for device resistance to dust and water

3. DESIGN PROCESS

Scanning the project into its most relevant product design phases.

Product Development Research

The process of Product Development Research began with extensive functional research on the use of the mask to select suitable sensors and electronic components, followed by a study of the algorithm governing the device.

Concept development

Concept development, basic algorithm study, and mechanical testing for comfort and functionality, aiming for a balance between aesthetics and performance. The proof of concept phase includes the transition from the initial idea to a working prototype.

Product Engineering

The product engineering process focuses on the study of shapes and volumes to balance aesthetics and functionality, and custom design of the electronic board.

Device Production

The last phase manages the device’s commissioning into production, ensuring proper implementation and managing the supply chain through certified partners.

4. PROJECT OUTPUTS

From the decomposition of the initial problems, some design solutions were proposed that were able to convert technical limitations into a structural renewal of the starting product.

Patents and awards

The device was awarded the Red Dot award and was selected from the ADI list.

The success of the product also led to its certification combined with the Urban Mask and its patent.
